Superintendent Says Girl Can Bring Special Dog to School

By AP

Mount Vernon, KY – The School Superintendent in Rockcastle County says a
seven year old girl will be able to bring a service dog
to class-----once he gets a letter of medical necessity
from a doctor who has treated Cheyenne Gilliam.

Cheyenne suffers from frequent epileptic seizures.
She and her dog, Mikki, have spent two days out of
Mount Vernon Elementary, because officials say they
weren't authorized to let the 55 pound dog into the
school.

Mikki has been trained to sense an impending
seizure and to warn Cheyenne so she can sit or
lie down. The dog also has been trained to lie
across the girl to protect and comfort her during the
seizure.
