Third Death Reported in Hazard Community College Shooting

Hazard Police Chief Minor Allen confirms that a third victim has died after a shooting at Hazard Community and Technical College.

Allen says the 12-year-old victim died just before 4:00 Wednesday afternoon at University of Kentucky Hospital.

State officials confirm one man and one woman were also killed in the shooting.

Twenty-one-year-old Dalton Stidham is charged with two counts of murder. Another count of attempted murder will likely be upgraded to a murder charge.

Police say Dalton shot and killed 20-year-old Caitlin Cornett and her uncle, 53-year-old Jackie Cornett, and injured the young girl, who died Wednesday.

Police say the shooter and the woman had a child together.

Caitlin Cornett was a former student at the school and had recently registered for a course to begin next month.

According to the school's president, the shooting took place in the parking lot of the First Federal Center building, which is located on campus.

He says the school's emergency plan worked.

Hazard City Police are investigating the matter with help from Kentucky State Police.

Governor Steve Beshear's office is aware of the shooting and is monitoring the situation, Kerri Richardson, the Governor's spokeswoman, told WDRB News' Bennett Haeberle.

Conor Duff, the college's evening coordinator, said the shootings happened about 4:30 p.m. at the campus 90 miles southeast of Lexington.

Duff said police then went through the school's two buildings to ensure no one else was at risk, and said the school was put on lockdown.
