Kentucky Teen Jailed for Refusing to Testify Against Brother Accused of Hate Crime

A federal judge in eastern Kentucky has jailed a teenager who refused to testify for the prosecution in a hate crime case against his brother. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that U.S. District Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove had 18-year-old Alex Jenkins taken into custody Monday and said he would give him another chance to testify Tuesday in the case against Anthony Jenkins.

Western Kentucky University's Glasgow campus will hold a memorial service Thursday afternoon for a student who died last week. The service for Trina M. Lawson, 36, will be at 2 p.m. in the WKU-Glasgow library. The campus is also collecting donations for her family.

Kentucky Human Rights Commission: End Death Penalty Now

The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights has called on the state to end the use of the death penalty, saying it is often applied unfairly against minorities and the poor. The commissioners, who enforce state and federal civil rights laws, urged Kentucky lawmakers in a resolution last week to repeal the law that allows the use of the death penalty in some murder cases.

Student Found Dead at WKU-Glasgow Campus, Classes Canceled for Rest of Friday

A Western Kentucky University student attending the Glasgow campus was found dead at the campus early Friday afternoon. Glasgow Police, emergency medical personnel and the Barren County Coroner’s office responded and are on the scene. The cause of death is under investigation. The name of the student will be released by the coroner’s office pending notification of kin. Classes have been canceled for the remainder of the day at the Glasgow campus.
