school shooting

Law enforcement agencies in Kentucky say their resources are being strained by a rash of threats against schools following last week’s shooting at a Florida high school that left 17 dead.

Extra security is being added at many schools across the commonwealth where students have threatened violence, most often on social media.

The Logan County Sheriff's Office posted this warning on its Facebook page Tuesday night:

Matt Markgraf

Prosecutors won't yet seek attempted murder charges against the 15-year-old suspect in a deadly shooting spree at Marshall County High School and will charge him with first-degree assault for now.

Assistant Marshall County Attorney Jason Darnall told reporters Wednesday that the 15-year-old boy will face 12 counts of first-degree assault instead of attempted murder because they feel they have a better case for those charges right now. Darnall pointed out that the penalties for first-degree assault are the same as for attempted murder.

The Kentucky State Police are now saying that a total of 20 people were injured during the shooting. They say 16 suffered gunshot wounds (Previous reports said 19 total, 14 gunshot wounds).  This number includes two victims who died.

KSP issued a release with the updated total soon after 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and later offered a clarification regarding the numbers.

Third Death Reported in Hazard Community College Shooting

Jan 17, 2013

Hazard Police Chief Minor Allen confirms that a third victim has died after a shooting at Hazard Community and Technical College.

Allen says the 12-year-old victim died just before 4:00 Wednesday afternoon at University of Kentucky Hospital.

State officials confirm one man and one woman were also killed in the shooting.

Twenty-one-year-old Dalton Stidham is charged with two counts of murder. Another count of attempted murder will likely be upgraded to a murder charge.

Police say Dalton shot and killed 20-year-old Caitlin Cornett and her uncle, 53-year-old Jackie Cornett, and injured the young girl, who died Wednesday.

Police say the shooter and the woman had a child together.
